TEMPLE TERRACE - Grimacing in determination, Kenjy Asin hurled a shot put Saturday at a special sports clinic to demonstrate that he and others aren't confined by their physical disabilities.
Shriners Hospitals for Children and BlazeSports Tampa Bay partnered Saturday for No Limits Sports Day at All People's Life Center, an annual event on the hospital's campus to showcase youths such as Asin. Former and current Paralympians - including wheelchair basketball standout Paul Schulte and field event expert Scott Danberg- joined the activities to give the youths pointers.
Some of the participants were as young as 7. One participant, Jerry Lauer, 14, of Thonotosassa, gleaned tips from Danberg about the javelin.
Asin, 20, said he wants to compete in the Paralympics someday. "I learned how to communicate with people with your disability and let them know if you're in a wheelchair you can still play sports," he said.
