Barry Rallies Past Tampa Men, 60-55

MIAMI SHORES - The Barry University men's team rallied past 13th-ranked University of Tampa 60-55 on Saturday, sending the Spartans to their second straight loss.

UT (16-6, 9-4 Sunshine State Conference) jumped out to a 7-1 lead to begin the game, but Barry settled down to make the first half a back-and-forth battle. After trailing by as many as seven, the Buccaneers (7-18, 1-12) took their first lead at 18-16 with 7:49 remaining in the half.

Barry hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to take a 28-25 lead into halftime.

The Buccaneers extended their advantage to begin the second half, taking their largest lead of the game at 32-25 with 18:59 to play.

UT then went on a 12-4 run to re-take the lead. The Spartans led 52-46 on a basket and free throw by Chris King with 5:31 left.

The Bucs scored the next seven points and then held on, scoring a late layup off a UT turnover to take a three-point lead with under a minute left.
Jeremy Black led Tampa with 22 points while Rashad Callaway added 11 points and Chris King had 10. Black and Chris Evans led the Spartans with seven rebounds while Johnathan Ball had three steals.

Up next for Tampa is Eckerd College at home on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

SAINT LEO 93, NOVA SOUTHEASTERN 84: Sophomore Quentin Cullop had career highs with 28 points and 11 assists to lead the Lions to a win (12-11, 5-7 Sunshine State Conference).

Also scoring in double figures for Saint Leo were Jordan Prais and Kyle Rowland (15 each), George Eshesimua (12) and Jonathan Banks (11).

Kevin Chester led Nova Southeastern (9-14, 4-8) with 27 points and 12 rebounds.

The Lions forced the Sharks into 19 turnovers and outscored them 18-2 in points off of turnovers.

Local Women

TAMPA 82, BARRY 77: The Spartans rallied from a 20-point halftime deficit to win in double overtime.

Sheena Walton led Tampa (18-5, 10-3 Sunshine State Conference) with 23 points and 12 rebounds. DeShaydia Mackey added 22 points and Erica Woodard scored 17 before fouling out with 21 seconds left in regulation.

UT senior Alexa Kane sent the game into OT with a runner with one second remaining.

The Buccaneers (16-8, 7-6) used an 8-3 run over the final 1:34 of OT to send the game to a second extra session tied at 70.

Walton began the second overtime with a basket and UT never trailed again.

NOVA SOUTHEASTERN 69, SAINT LEO 67: Stephanie Sarosi scored 19 of her game-high 27 points in the first half and added 12 rebounds as Nova Southeastern (17-6, 10-2 Sunshine State Conference) ended Saint Leo's two-game winning streak.

Melissa Guerero led the Lions (11-12, 4-8) with 21 points, while Dominique Daniels scored 16 points and freshman Lauren Lee had her first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
