TAMPA - Crews with the state's Department of Forestry are keeping watch over a 15-acre brush fire that started Sunday night south of Polk City.
As of late Sunday night, the fire was 50 percent contained and Florida Highway Patrol troopers had activated electronic signs warning commuters on Interstate 4, said forestry officer Jessica Warren.
Smoke or flames posed no threat to I-4 commuters late Sunday night, Warren said.
The brush fire sparked in a marsh near Lake Mattie on Highway 557, Warren said. It is located about six miles south of where smoke from a wildfire mixed with dense fog and caused a deadly 70-car pile-up on Jan. 9, Warren said.
Crews are expected to be out all night keeping tabs on the blaze, Warren said.
