TAMPA - Hairstyles of all shapes, styles and sizes were on display Sunday as more than 500 people attended the 2008 Hair and Barber Explosion.
The regional competition took place at the Doubletree Hotel Tampa Westshore Airport, 4500 West Cypress St. About a dozen hairdressers competed in front of a panel of judges for the $2,000 grand prize.
The event's organizer, Lucretia Hawthorne, started the competition - the first of its kind in Tampa - in 2006.
"I'm from Alabama, where we have these types of events all the time," she said.
Hawthorne owns Platinum Plus Beauty Salon on 1412 W. Waters Ave., which is joined by four other Florida salons in sponsoring the competition.
The judges look at both the hairdressers and the styles they create, which ranged from the practical and everyday to the more exotic. Several models sported hair shaped like the Eiffel Tower or a nest of snakes that echoed Medusa from Greek mythology.
"It's about appearance, creativity and presence," Hawthorne said.
