TAMPA - Chief meteorologist Dick Fletcher of Tampa Bay's 10 suffered a stroke Monday and is recovering at a local hospital, said Darren Richards, the station's news director.
Shortly after the station aired the news on its 6 p.m. Monday newscast, well-wishers flooded the station's Web site with more than 100 e-mail messages for Fletcher and his family, Richards said. The station also fielded numerous calls of concern, Richards said.
"People are reaching out," Richards said. "He means a lot to people. Obviously, Dick has meant a lot to folks at the station for a long time."
Fletcher has been with Tampa Bay's 10 since 1980 and anchors the weather reports each weekday. He suffered a stroke in 2004 but made "a quick recovery" and was back on the air within weeks, Richards said.
"That's obviously what we're hoping and praying for this time," Richards said.
