TAMPA - A teenager struck while crossing Dale Mabry Highway on Friday has been upgraded to fair condition at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital, the hospital said.
Brittany Gruber, 18, of West Islip, N.Y., had been listed in serious condition after the accident Friday at Waters Avenue, officials said. Gruber was visiting Tampa to play in a college soccer showcase. Her teammate, Kaitlyn M. Grogan, 18, of Bayside, N.Y., was killed.
Gruber's parents, William and Vicky, declined an interview at the hospital but say in a written statement:
"We are very grateful for the amount of support we have received from our friends, family and the Tampa Bay community during this difficult time.
"Brittany is in fair condition, but she is improving with every passing minute. The doctors and nurses at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital are doing everything possible to care for her and help our family during this time.
"While we understand the interest in Brittany's story, and are thankful for the concern about her well-being, we request that you respect our family's privacy. ... We send our prayers and love to the Grogan family."
