This second-generation private ship being built by Virgin Galactic to fly tourists into weightlessness is an exciting experiment in the privatization of space flight.
"I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth," pilot John Gillespie Magee Jr. wrote in the 1940s after a flight less than 6 miles high. The new SpaceShipTwo will go 62 miles high. Even though flight tests are incomplete, reservations already are coming in from the wealthy and adventurous.
Being neither, we'll keep earth's surly bonds firmly attached until seats are available on, say, SpaceShipForty.
