TAMPA - Ridership at Tampa International Airport declined 0.7 percent in January, compared with January 2007, to 766,014 departing passengers, continuing a slide prompted by the poor economy, an airport report issued Monday said.
The rate of year-over-year decline in January was not as severe as the 2.1 percent decrease in November compared with November 2006 or the 4.2 percent decrease in December compared with December 2006.
"Hopefully, we are on the road to recovery," airport director Louis Miller said.
Tampa International set an annual record of 9.58 million passenger departures in 2007.
About the same number of passengers fly into Tampa International as depart, which means the airport handled more than 19.1 million passengers in 2007.
Southwest Airlines remained the airport's busiest carrier in January with a 27.5 percent market share, and Delta Air Lines and US Airways ranked second and third with 13.3 percent and 10.7 percent, respectively, of local passengers.
Southwest's ridership grew 9.3 percent in January compared with January 2007 to 211,019 departing passengers.
St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport reported 77,386 total passengers in January, with domestic traffic up 40 percent to 72,700 and international traffic up 118 percent to 4,686.
