WESLEY CHAPEL -- New River Elementary, Pasco County's newest school, officially opened its doors to students today.
Since the school year began in August, students and teachers have been working out of portable classrooms on the campus of Sand Pine Elementary as they waited for construction to finish on their school at 4710 River Glen Blvd.
Although today is the first day of classes in the new facility, parents and children got a sneak peek Monday night during a "Leaping Into Our New School" event sponsored by the PTA.
New River Elementary has about 260 students. The low enrollment is because the Pasco County School Board approved a phased-in attendance boundary plan for the school.
In the 2008-09 academic year, the entire attendance boundary will take effect. The school is built for 762 students.
New River is drawing its students from areas previously zoned for Wesley Chapel Elementary and Taylor Elementary.
New River's reign as the county's newest public school will be short. Two schools – Crews Lake Middle in Shady Hills and Veterans Elementary in Wesley Chapel – are scheduled to open in August.
