Carusone Wins 3 As Lions Place 3rd

ST. LEO - On a busy weekend for Saint Leo athletics, sophomore swimmer Julie Carusone stood out with three individual wins as the men's and women's swim teams finished third at the Sunshine State Collegiate Championships last weekend in Orlando.

Carusone won the women's 200 and 400-meter individual medley, as well as the 200 breaststroke with a conference-record and NCAA II season-best time of 2 minutes, 20.18 seconds. She will be competing in the NCAA II national championships from March 12-15 in those three events, as well as in the 100 breast.

Former Land O' Lakes star Tim Olson won two events for the men: the 100 freestyle and the 200 IM. He and Matt Attal (1,000 free) became the first men to win individual conference swimming titles for the Lions. Freshman Alisha Adams also posted a victory in the 100 backstroke.

LACROSSE STARTS STRONG: The lacrosse team began the 2008 season with a 16-4 blowout victory against Savannah College of Art and Design at University Field on Saturday night.

The Lions outshot the Bees 53-20. Freshman Tommy Bryant had three goals, junior Chris Storrie had two goals and two assists, and goalkeeper David Erdman saved 10 of the 14 shots he faced.
Saint Leo is off until Saturday, when the team faces No. 4 Dowling College at noon at University Field.

CULLOP, CLARK HONORED: On Monday, men's basketball sophomore point guard Quentin Cullop and baseball senior pitcher Ryan Clark earned Sunshine State Conference player of the week honors.

Cullop had the best week of his Lions career, averaging 25.0 points and 8.7 assists as Saint Leo beat nationally ranked Tampa and Nova Southeastern. Clark earned his first win of the year with 6 1/3 scoreless innings against Palm Beach Atlantic, allowing one hit while striking out 11. The Lions (7-3 as of Monday) went on to sweep a three-game series against PBA by a combined score of 31-7.

The men's basketball team looks for a third consecutive win on Wednesday at Florida Southern, while the baseball team plays against Bentley today at 5 at Southard Stadium.

LIONS LEFTOVERS: The softball team, 4-0 before a late doubleheader against Webber International on Tuesday, returns to action against Nova Southeastern, Palm Beach Atlantic, Midwestern State and Tampa in the Eckerd College Triton Tournament beginning Friday. ... The men's tennis team will go for its first win of the year at Northwood today, and travels with the women's team to Florida Tech on Saturday.
