5 Questions With Khrystyne Ely

Khrystyne Ely is the starting pitcher and part-time outfielder for the Sickles High softball team.

She is 1-3 on the mound with a 4.98 ERA and is batting .313 with five hits and three RBIs.

Ely, a Tribune All-Hillsborough County first-team selection as a junior, has signed with Troy, where her older sister, Katie, starts at third base as a freshman.

How excited are you about being able to play with your sister at Troy next year?

Really excited, because our whole lives we've played on the same team and it felt like I lost a half of me when she graduated because she's always been at third base and I was a pitcher. It's going to be awesome.

What has been the best pitching performance of your high school career?

I think when I was a freshman we played Alonso 11 innings, and the next morning I pitched against Chamberlain in seven innings. We lost, but I did a really good job that game.

What do you think is the strong point of the team this season?

I think we've all bonded a lot better. We all get along. Previous years, there have been some problems. We've all played together so long and we have such a bigger group now.

You said you like to change your hair style (and color) every other week. What's the reasoning behind that?

I get bored, and I'm a pretty unique person. I hate when everybody has the same hairstyle, because if someone cuts their hair, then everyone starts getting (that style) and color. I just like to spice it up so no one can copy me.

Do you think the country is ready for a female president?

I think so. I think Hillary Clinton can do it. I think we're ready for her. No one thinks girls have authority and no one listens to girls, it's always a male. If we can finally get a female in there to do her thing, it would be like, 'Oh my gosh.' I'm just rooting for her because she is a girl.
