GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Bill Miller.
The "Hooked on Fishing" crew fished with captains Scott Moore and Justin Moore this week. Also joining us was captain Billy Miller and Tribune outdoors editor Frank Sargeant. While fishing Palma Sola and Sarasota bays in the face of an approaching cold front, we found the fish active and hungry. Tossing 1/4 -ounce jig heads with new penny-colored Gulp shrimp produced trout along the grass edges, snook and reds along the mangrove-lined shorelines and pompano, ladyfish, bluefish and Spanish mackerel in the channels and deep sloughs. Many small fish such as pinfish, grunts, catfish and blowfish also inhaled the Gulp stink baits. White bait was spotted all over the deep grass off Anna Maria.
Spanish mackerel, bonito and bluefish have made their way into Tampa Bay, feeding on the bait that appears to have never left the upper bay. During the last warm spell, several tarpon were spotted and hooked around the Frankland and Gandy bridges.
Silver trout have been biting well in the Alafia River just in front of the Williams Park boat ramp. Silvers have also been caught in the Hillsborough River near the Davis Islands airport. Double Love's Lures tipped with a small piece of shrimp and bounced along the bottom will produce multiple hook-ups.
Captain Bill Miller hosts "Hooked on Fishing" on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-8 p.m. on Bright House Networks Catch 47.
