CORAL GABLES - Looking to bounce back from their first league loss, the Duke Blue Devils instead stumbled again.
The Miami Hurricanes beat fifth-ranked Duke for the first time in 45 years Wednesday, scoring 15 consecutive points to build a big lead early in the second half and holding on to win 96-95.
Ranked No. 2 just last week, the Blue Devils (22-3 overall, 10-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) lost for the second time in four days.
Miami (18-7, 5-6) beat Duke for the first time since the first game in the series Dec. 21, 1962. The Blue Devils had won all 10 games since.
Miami made six of eight free throws in the final 41 seconds to preserve the upset. Duke's DeMarcus Nelson sank a layup with two seconds left to make the score 94-92, but Miami's Jack McClinton sank two clinching free throws before Nelson hit a meaningless 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Senior Dwayne Collins scored a career-high 26 points and McClinton added 22 to help the Hurricanes win their third ACC game in a row. They beat a top-five team for the first time since a victory at No. 2 Connecticut on Feb. 20, 1999.
Sophomore Jon Scheyer scored a career-high 27 points for the Blue Devils, who nearly rallied from a 20-point second-half deficit.
MEMPHIS 97, TULANE 71: Chris Douglas-Roberts scored 29 points to lead No. 1 Memphis past Tulane, giving Coach John Calipari his 400th victory.
The win, coupled with second-ranked Tennessee's 89-70 victory against Auburn, sets up a showdown Saturday between the two top-ranked teams in the country. It will be the first 1-2 meeting since No. 2 Ohio State beat No. 1 Wisconsin 49-48 on Feb. 25, 2007.
After remaining undefeated with a one-point victory against UAB, Memphis (26-0, 12-0 Conference USA), never had to worry against Tulane (15-10, 5-6).
TENNESSEE 89, AUBURN 70: Ramar Smith scored 19 points as second-ranked Tennessee (24-2, 11-1) beat Auburn (13-11, 3-8) in a Southeastern Conference game.
Tyler Smith added 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Vols, who extended their home winning streak to 30 games. JaJuan Smith and Chris Lofton both had 12 points.
NORTH CAROLINA 84, N.C. STATE 70: Tyler Hansbrough had 32 points - including 16 during the decisive 11-minute run - to help No. 3 North Carolina beat host North Carolina State.
Wayne Ellington added 21 points for the Tar Heels (25-2, 10-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who led by 20 points to easily avenge last year's stunning loss here despite playing yet again without injured point guard Ty Lawson. The Wolfpack fell to 15-11, 4-8.
BUTLER 51, ILLINOIS-CHICAGO 46: A.J. Graves scored 14 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer in the final minute, and No. 8 Butler (25-2, 14-2) closed in on the top seed in the Horizon League Tournament by beating Illinois-Chicago (14-13, 8-8).
WISCONSIN 71, ILLINOIS 57: Trevon Hughes scored 18 points and Marcus Landry added 17 to help No. 11 Wisconsin beat Illinois and move into a first-place tie in the Big Ten.
The Badgers (22-4, 12-2) moved into a tie with Purdue atop the conference.
MICHIGAN STATE 86, PENN STATE 49: Raymar Morgan scored 16 points and No. 19 Michigan State (21-5, 9-4) remained unbeaten at home with a Big Ten victory against Penn State (12-13, 4-9).
NEBRASKA 71, KANSAS STATE 64: Steve Harley scored a career-high 20 points and Nebraska (15-9, 4-7 Big 12) limited Michael Beasley to 17 points and held No. 24 Kansas State (18-7, 8-3) scoreless on its last eight possessions.
MARQUETTE 73, ST. JOHN'S 64: Jerel McNeal had 20 points and seven rebounds to lead No. 25 Marquette (19-6, 9-5) past St. John's (10-15, 4-10) in a Big East game.
ECKERD 87, TAMPA 86: Jeremy Black scored a career-high 37 points, but the Spartans' (16-7, 9-5 Sunshine State Conference) comeback came up short against the Tritons (17-7, 9-4).
FLORIDA SOUTHERN 97, SAINT LEO 79: At Lakeland, Rob Eldridge scored a game-high 30 points and Will Graham added 25 to lead Florida Southern (20-7, 11-3, SSC) past Saint Leo (12-12, 5-8).
