Doctors will tackle myths about women's health and provide practical information in a free symposium March 1.
Topics including diabetes, depression, menopause, sleep disorders and a range of cancers will be the focus of the third annual Focus on Females Women's Healthcare Symposium at Channelside Cinemas in Tampa. All the speakers are local physicans.
Health screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, body fat and oxygen levels will be conducted, as will guidance on conducting breast self-examinations. Free fitness classes also will take place, including yoga, pilates, kick boxing, aeorobics and boot camp training.
The symposium is the creation of Steven L. Maskin, an ophthalmologist at The Cornea and Eye Surface Center. He says the event breaks down the wall between doctors and patients and offers them an opportunity to speak about health care concerns outside of an exam room. The Tampa Tribune is one of the symposium sponsors.
The event's keynote speaker is Dottie Berger MacKinnon, chairwoman of Kids Charity of Tampa Bay. A breast cancer survivor, the former Hillsborough County commissioner and mother of five will highlight local health care resources available to women.
