PLANT CITY - Second-grade teacher Leigh Burdette and kindergarten aide Rhonda Locker went lip to snout with a pig today to raise money for charity.
Burdette and Locker won the honor of kissing Miss Piggy the potbelly pig in front of more than 500 Trapnell Elementary School students by raising the most for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Burdette raised $673 and Locker raised $565.
Together, they accounted for most of the $1,420 raised at Trapnell Elementary. Most of the money was pitched in by Trapnell's students.
Burdette, a first-year teacher, said it was a fun way to raise money to fight the disease. Locker, a 26-year employee of the county school system, said she feels committed to the cause because her mother and a former student died of cancer.
Locker actually has experience bussing a porker. Last year, she was also a winner in the school's kiss a pig contest.
The school's students and faculty members gathered on Trapnell's play courts to watch the two pucker up with the porker, a pet pig owned by a teacher.
"What a great day this is, we get to see a teacher kiss a pig today," Assistant Principal Anthony Montoto said before Burdette and Locker laid the lip lock on Miss Piggy.
