The driver in a fatal car crash that brought attention last year to the possible traffic hazards posed by some mailboxes has committed suicide, the Hillsborough County medical examiner's office reported.

Brittany Romer, 21, of Gibsonton, died Feb. 16 of compression of the neck, according to the medical examiner's office.

Romer was involved in a one-car crash on Oct. 25 that killed her passenger, 20-year-old Rachel M. Morris, of Riverview.

Romer was driving a BMW that veered off Apollo Beach Boulevard while heading west, striking several mailbox posts, vaulting into the air and tumbling nearly 300 feet before coming to rest upside down. Morris was pronounced dead at the scene, while Romer suffered a broken collarbone.

Romer was later was charged with vehicular homicide by deputies who said speed was the main factor behind the crash.

Romer's father, Jay Romer, argued that the crash would not have killed anyone if the mailboxes were secured lightly enough to breakaway when struck by a car.
