ST. PETERSBURG - A house at 4437 17th Ave. S. caught fire Saturday evening, suffering extensive damage.
The fire originated from the front bedroom of the single family residence.
St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue received a call to respond from 911 operators before 8 p.m.
The fire was under control within an hour. No one was home at the time of the fire. The crew removed a white house cat from the residence.
The owner, Laurel Stoddard, arrived on scene as crews were completing overhaul operations. The American Red Cross was called in to assist.
The investigator determined the fire was an accident, likely caused by an iron in the bedroom closet.
Smoke and heat damage throughout the house was estimated at $10,000.
