There's lots of complaining and finger-pointing when it comes to high gas prices. But in the 35 years since our first experience with price spikes and short supplies during the OPEC embargo in 1973, our vehicles have gotten bigger and the miles we drive has increased.
And apparently we can't be bothered by accelerating slowly, coasting to stops, carpooling or occasionally walking or bicycling.
As a nation we have made little effort to minimize our consumption. What would a gallon of gas cost today if we'd used just 10 percent less during the past three decades? I guess you could say when it comes to gas prices, the less we're in the driver's seat, the more we're in the driver's seat.
