TAMPA - Prosecutors will not file formal charges against a Montreal Canadiens player arrested last week in a flap with a police officer outside a South Tampa nightclub.
Veteran forward Tom Kostopoulos had been charged with misdemeanor resisting an officer outside Whiskey Park after he and other players crowded around officers charging rookie defenseman Ryan O'Byrne with felony grand theft.
Kostopoulos, 29, wrote a letter of apology to the officer involved, Assistant State Attorney Pam Bondi said Thursday. He also agreed to continue to perform community service at home, Bondi said.
The case against O'Byrne, 23, is still pending, Bondi said.
Tampa police arrested O'Byrne outside the nightclub at 720 S. Howard Ave. on Feb. 11 after a woman noticed her purse missing and security officers found O'Byrne holding it and the woman's cell phone.
