PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Essence Carson scored 16 points, Kia Vaughn had 11 points and 10 rebounds and No. 5 Rutgers gave Coach Vivian Stringer her 799th career victory, 62-43 Saturday against Providence.
Stringer is trying to become just the third major women's college basketball coach to 800 victories. Tennessee's Pat Summitt and former Texas coach Jody Conradt are the others. She'll get her first chance Wednesday when Rutgers hosts DePaul.
Ashley Etheridge scored 12 points for the Friars (12-14, 2-11 Big East), who were coming off a 62-58 upset of No. 22 Syracuse on Tuesday.
The Scarlet Knights (22-4, 11-1) built a 21-8 lead in the first nine minutes. Carson scored eight points during this stretch while six of Providence's eight points came on 3-point baskets by Brittany Dorsey and Kendria Holmes.
UCONN 98, ST. JOHN'S 41: Ketia Swanier scored a career-high 20 points to lead No. 1 Connecticut past St. John's, which suspended six players just before the game.
The Red Storm (13-13, 4-9 Big East) played just six players, and the starting five all played more than 30 minutes. Kia Wright, Nikki Jo Rotolo, Charisse Curtis, Kristin Moore, Sheree Ledbetter and Recee Mitchell were suspended for violating an unspecified team rule.
Renee Montgomery and Maya Moore each added 18 for UConn (26-1, 13-1), which remained a half-game ahead of Rutgers for first place in the conference. The two teams play each other in the regular-season finale March 3.
STANFORD 60, CAL 68: Jayne Appel scored 12 of her 16 points in the second half and Candice Wiggins overcame a horrid shooting game to score the go-ahead basket down the stretch, helping No. 7 Stanford beat No. 8 California to take control of the Pac-10 race.
Wiggins missed 14 of her first 16 shots before stealing the ball from Devanei Hampton and scoring on an uncontested layup that gave the Cardinal a 58-56 lead with 2:47 to go. She hit a pull-up jumper to give Stanford (25-3, 14-2) a four-point lead and the Cardinal hung on from there to complete the season sweep of the rival Golden Bears (23-4, 14-2).
BAYLOR 59, IOWA ST. 54: Jessica Morrow scored 18 points and No. 9 Baylor rallied to beat Iowa State, snapping a two-game road losing streak.
Angela Tisdale added 14 for the Bears (23-3, 11-2 Big 12), who finished the game on a 15-4 run. Jocelyn Anderson had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Iowa State (16-10, 5-8).
OKLAHOMA 81, OKLAHOMA ST. 71: Courtney Paris had 18 points and 15 rebounds for her 86th straight double-double, helping No. 11 Oklahoma (20-5, 10-3 Big 12) avenge a blowout loss by beating No. 16 Oklahoma State (21-5, 9-4).
Paris scored her 2,000th point on a basket with 6:55 left in the first half, becoming the fourth Oklahoma player to reach that mark and the quickest in Big 12 history, needing only 94 games.
Paris also passed Baylor's Sophia Young to become the Big 12's career leader in offensive rebounds, recording a career-best 11 to raise her overall total to 495.
W. VIRGINIA 76, VILLANOVA 55: No. 13 West Virginia (22-4, 11-2 Big East) scored 22 of the game's first 24 points and never allowed Villanova (15-12, 5-9) to get close after that.
COLORADO 73, KANSAS ST. 68: Brittany Spears finished with 20 points and Jackie McFarland scored 17 of her 19 points in the second half, leading Colorado (15-11, 4-9 Big 12) to a victory over No. 15 Kansas State (18-8, 10-3).
UTAH 57, NEW MEXICO 53: Kalee Whipple and Morgan Warburton keyed a second-half run and No. 18 Utah (23-3, 12-0 Mountain West) rallied to beat New Mexico (14-12, 6-7).
SYRACUSE 66, CINCINNATI 56: Chandrea Jones had 18 points and 11 rebounds to help No. 22 Syracuse (20-6, 8-5 Big East) beat Cincinnati (11-15, 2-12).
MARQUETTE 76, PITT 69: Krystal Ellis scored 18 points and Marquette (15-12, 7-7 Big East) mounted a furious second-half rally to knock off No. 23 Pittsburgh (18-7, 8-4).
