ST. PETERSBURG -- A homeless man has been arrested after he got into a fight this morning that left another homeless man on life support, officials said.
Lane Fogle, 37, faces a charge of felony battery after an assault that left Craig Lionel Kennedy with a life-threatening head injury, officials said.
Kennedy, 49, fell backward and hit his head after he was punched, said St. Petersburg Police Department spokesman George Kajtsa. He was unconscious when paramedics arrived and did not regain consciousness as he was transported to Bayfront Medical Center, Kajtsa said.
Police said Fogle ran off after the 12:35 a.m. fight outside the St. Vincent de Paul soup kitchen at 401 15th St. N., Kajtsa said.
Witnesses told police that earlier in the evening Kennedy called Fogle a name, Kajtsa said.
If Kennedy dies, the charge against Fogle will be upgraded to manslaughter, St. Petersburg police spokesman Bill Proffitt said.
