GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Mark Cook.
Although all conditions pointed to what should have been a breakout week for spawning bass, area fishermen and biologists are perplexed at the lack of bass on the beds.
Friday, I fished Teneroc in Lakeland with Brian Meyers of Valrico. With a warm day, water temperatures at 70 degrees and a recent full moon, we fully expected to have a chance at a lunker fish. Teneroc director Danin Moxley met us at the check-in station, took us on a quick tour of some of the newer lakes and explained fishing had been slow as of late. Most of the pits on the property are at near record lows and several of the ramps are out of the water.
"We are really not sure what's going on other than the lack of rainfall over the past two years may be playing a factor," Moxley said.
Meyers and I launched on the Fishhook Lake and worked the south side in the cover of the wind for about an hour before our first bite. We threw crankbaits and spinnerbaits for a while without any success.
We both switched to plastic worms and our luck soon changed. Myers was working a pumpkin seed 4-inch finesse worm and I threw a Zoom June Bug lizard. Though the size was not impressive, we managed eight bass and missed at least that many in less than three hours on the water.
