Now that Fidel Castro is retiring, it is certainly time to take a second look at the long embargo and antagonism against Cuba.
Certainly it was not all about communism; we have apparently no problems trading with other communist countries, e.g., China, for whom we fall over backwards trying to please. Nor was it about abuse of human rights; so many other countries abuse human rights and we keep right on trading with them. No, it was about the fact that Castro stood up and faced Uncle Sam straight out and he was from one of those little countries that the United States thought it somehow "owned."
In fact, the embargo was a real disaster, but not for Castro. He used it as an excuse for every problem his country had. And the restrictions on travel and remittances have only hurt the Cuban people who would like nothing more than to be on good relations with us.
So, please, candidates for the presidency, think again about Cuba.
