Moore To Play In FACA All-Star Game

Last year, Academy of the Holy Names senior and now USF freshman guard Gianna Messina was named the MVP of the Florida Athletic Coaches Association girls basketball all-star game in Lakeland.

Bloomingdale's Paris Moore could become the second consecutive Hillsborough County player to earn the award.
After being named the District 13 (Hillsborough County) Player of the Year, Moore will get her chance to play against some of the top players in the state in the 2008 FACA All-Star game March 14-15.

"I wasn't surprised," Bloomingdale coach Mike Kiser said. "It's tough to stop a kid like her from getting to the basket."

Moore, a 5-foot-6 senior guard, led the Bulls with 18 points, 8.9 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game. Kiser said Division-I North Florida and D-II Rollins have shown interest.

"All she cared about was how the team did, she never cared about her stats," Kiser said. "That was her best asset."

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ONE PLACE: River Ridge's Jim Valentine Athletic Complex will be busy as the school will host the Checker's/Rally's 2008 NHSCA High School Weightlifting National Championships, May 9-10, and will follow that up by hosting the 2008 NHSCA National High School and Open Grappling Championships June 20-21.

Both events are open to students in grades 9-12. Registration for the weightlifting event is $30, while the grappling registration is $50 online and $75 per open division.
For information on both events contact River Ridge wrestling coach Russ Schenk at (727) 774-7179 or visit www.nhsca.com.

ALL-STAR GAME: The United Negro College Fund Boys & Girls East vs. West All-Star Basketball game will be held at Jefferson High on March 7. The girls game will start at 6 p.m., followed by the girls 3-point shooting contest, the boys 3-point shooting and slam-dunk contest and the boys game. Tickets are $5. Rosters have yet to be determined.

HIGGINS RESIGNS: Academy of the Holy Names basketball coach Casey Higgins, who won her 100th game earlier this season, has resigned after five seasons at the school.

Higgins, who has two young children, told her team Wednesday of her decision. She will remain on staff as a physical education teacher at AHN.

"Casey has had a fantastic run at AHN,'' athletic director Pete Young said. "Her teams consistently exceeded expectations. She will be dearly missed.''

Higgins, 29, a college point guard at Kansas, coached the Jaguars JV for one season before taking over the varsity before the 2003-04 season. She compiled a record of 110-30 in five seasons, including trips to the Class 3A state tournament in 2005 and 2007. This season AHN went 18-10.

JUNIOR GOLF TOURNEY: The American Junior Golf Association moved its Mizuno Junior to Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor to be played March 20-23. The event will comprise 216 male and female golfers between the ages of 12 and 18, who will compete on Innisbrook's Copperhead and Highlands North courses. The list of competitors will be filled by the AJGA's Performance-Based Entry system.

Practice rounds, which will take place March 20, are open to the public.
