As of today, Florida drivers must have personal injury protection insurance as part of their automobile policy.
State lawmakers briefly dropped the requirement for the coverage, known as PIP, in their battle over the state's no-fault auto insurance law last year.
However, the Legislature and Gov. Charlie Crist decided to bring back the state's no-fault law effective today, meaning motorists once again will be required to carry PIP coverage.
Drivers now need at least $10,000 worth of PIP coverage. This insurance pays for your medical expenses, and those of your passengers, if you are in an accident.
PIP coverage is different from the $10,000 in property damage liability coverage drivers are required to carry.
Drivers who canceled PIP in 2007 should reinstate it. Motorists without PIP coverage can have their driver's license, tag and registration suspended for up to three years or until proof of insurance is provided. Reinstatement fees can range between $150 and $500.
