ST. PETERSBURG - A 24-year-old ex-convict driving a stolen van was killed Tuesday evening when the vehicle ran a stop sign and was T-boned, police said.
Eight minutes before the wreck, the same Dodge van was used in the theft of liquor from a Gulfport store, police said.
Antonio Savelle Sherman was driving the van north on 45th Street South when it ran a stop sign at 22nd Avenue South at 7 p.m., police said. The van was struck on the driver's side by a Mitsubishi that was headed east on 22nd Avenue South, police said.
The van flipped and Sherman was partially ejected, police said. He ended up pinned under the driver's side door, police said. He was pronounced dead at the intersection, they said.
The driver of the Mitsubishi, Michael Ray Wahl, 67, of St. Petersburg, was transported to Bayfront Medical Center. He was in serious condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Eight minute before the wreck, the same van had been used in the theft of liquor at Gulfport Liquors, 4918 Gulfport Blvd. S., police said.
Sherman was released from prison in August after serving a three-year sentence for cocaine possession, according to the Florida Department of Corrections. In November, he was sentenced to 15 days in Pinellas County Jail after pleading no contest to obstruction and disorderly conduct charges.
