Hillsborough Community College students who want an on-campus living experience will get their wish this week.
The college's Dale Mabry campus is set to open its first student housing complex, an unusual development for a community college.
Last year, the HCC Foundation arranged with a private developer to build the 420-bed apartment complex in the southwest corner of the campus. The college had surveyed students and found that hundreds wanted campus housing.
School administrators told the developer, Atlanta-based Place Properties, that more students were choosing HCC because they couldn't get into the University of South Florida, which has raised admission standards in recent years. And many of those students still want a traditional college experience.
With the new apartment complex, named Hawks Landing, their residential experience may be grander than they could find in most university dormitories. The developer boasts of deluxe kitchens, 9-foot ceilings and washers and dryers in every unit. Students will get discounted rental rates.
