CLEARWATER - A 53-year-old Safety Harbor man who police say fired upon a group outside a home on New Year's Day faces additional charges, police say.
Willie Gene Ashley
Originally, Willie Gene Ashley faced one count of attempted homicide because one person in the group, Cordarel Jeter, 19, suffered two gunshot wounds, said Elizabeth Daly-Watts, Clearwater's public safety spokeswoman. The Clearwater teenager is in stable condition at Bayfront Medical Center, police said.
Now Ashley also faces three counts of aggravated assault in the 1:10 a.m. shooting at 1110 Tangerine St., she said. Three other people were outside with Jeter when he was shot, she said.
They have been identified as Yvonne Jeter, 46, of Clearwater; Natasha Smith, 24, of Clearwater; and Tiffany Smith, 27, of Clearwater. None lives at the address where the shooting occurred, and all are related.
Detectives say Willie Ashley drove to the residence, fired at the group, then drove away. The shooting apparently stemmed from a fight with one of Jeter's family members just a few minutes before.
As Ashley drove away, a witness followed him and notified police of his location. He was arrested a few minutes later at Union Street and McMullen-Booth Road.
Police are not looking for anyone else.
