Power Demand To Surge
Record energy use normally occurs during a summer heat wave amid near-100-degree temperatures. St. Petersburg-based Progress Energy Florida flipped that scenario around, saying demand for electricity may reach record levels this morning as temperatures dip into the 20s and customers try to stay warm. Demand for electricity peaked on Jan. 24, 2003, when customers used 10,076 megawatt-hours of power.
Trump Pursues Legal Steps
Donald Trump on Wednesday filed a motion in federal court in Tampa seeking to drop two of SimDag LLC's original partners from his lawsuit against the developer of Trump Tower Tampa. Those partners are Howard Howell and Patrick Sheppard. Trump filed his lawsuit in May, seeking to end his licensing agreement with SimDag and remove his name from the tower.
Outlook Concerns Workers
Tampa-area workers are increasingly nervous about their future, a survey released Wednesday said. The Hudson Employment Index, published by staffing firm Hudson Highland Group, surveys 9,000 people nationwide monthly on their personal finances and worker confidence. In December's survey, the Tampa-St. Petersburg area scored 78.8 in its worker confidence index, down 11 points from November. That ranks Tampa below the national index of 87.3, the survey said.
STATE
AirTran HQ Remains
AirTran Airways said Wednesday it would maintain its corporate headquarters in Orlando, rather than relocate it to its main hub in Atlanta, and add 121 jobs to its 300-person Orlando work force. Salaries for the new positions would average $45,000, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist said in a release.
