Spartans Down Second Straight Ranked Team

WINTER PARK - The University of Tampa men's basketball team won its Sunshine State Conference opener with a 70-66 victory over previously undefeated and No. 4 Rollins College.

It was the second win against a ranked team in a week, as the Spartans (8-2, 1-0) defeated No. 12 Augusta State on Saturday. The defending SSC champion Tars fall to 10-1 and 0-1 in league action.

After Rollins scored the first basket of the game with 18:41 remaining in the first half, UT scored the next four points and never trailed. The Spartans took a 31-21 lead into halftime.

The nation's fourth-ranked D-II team mounted a comeback with an 8-2 run to open the second half.

With Tampa leading 69-66 with 16 seconds remaining, Rollins' Jonny Reibel missed a three-pointer that would have sent the game to overtime. Jeremy Black secured the rebound and put the game out of reach with a free throw.

All five Tampa starters scored in double figures, with Johnathan Ball's15 leading the way. Chris Evans added 14 points, while Rashad Callaway and Chris King each had 13.
USF Women Miss Opportunity Vs. Vandy

The University of South Florida women's basketball team lost to Vanderbilt, 75-48, missing a chance to extend the second longest winning streak in school history to 10 games.

USF (10-3) hit only six field goals in the first half.

Daiane Packer led USF with 11 points, while Shantia Grace added 10 points.

Men's Top 25

NORTH CAROLINA 90, KENT ST. 61: Tyler Hansbrough scored 25 points to lead No. 1 North Carolina to a rout of Kent State.
Wayne Ellington and Ty Lawson both had 17 points for the Tar Heels (14-0), who never trailed during their final nonconference tuneup before Atlantic Coast Conference play starts Sunday at No. 19 Clemson, pulling away late for their fourth straight victory by least 25 points.

Hansbrough was 11-for-11 from the free-throw line in his seventh straight 20-point game for the Tar Heels.

PITTSBURGH 96, LAFAYETTE 75: Keith Benjamin and Tyrell Biggs, playing much more for No. 13 Pittsburgh with two starters injured, led a second-half comeback and the Panthers withstood Lafayette's 3-point shooting show.

Benjamin scored 20 points and Biggs and Sam Young both had 19 to help the Panthers (12-1). Lafayette (8-5) hit seven of their first nine 3-point attempts and went 17 of 31 on 3's for the game.

TEXAS 67, TCU 59: Damion James had another double-double for No. 14 Texas, scoring a career-high 29 points and grabbing 14 rebounds to lead the Longhorns over TCU.

D.J. Augustin added 20 points for the Longhorns (12-2), who snapped a two-game losing streak.

The game was also the season debut for freshman forward Gary Johnson, the Longhorns' top recruit who missed the first 13 games while doctors monitored an unspecified heart condition last summer. He started, and finished with five points and five rebounds.

James had his seventh double-double in nine games.

MISSISSIPPI 86, ALABAMA A&M 50: David Huertas scored 17 points and No. 18 Mississippi won its school-record 13th straight game.

The Rebels (13-0) opened the game with a 13-0 run and led the Bulldogs (3-7) by as many as 28 points late in the first half.

DAYTON 83, AKRON 81: London Warren scored six points in the second overtime, including a big free throw, to lead No. 20 Dayton.

The Flyers (12-1), who entered the Top 25 for the first time this season on Monday, extended their winning streak to 11 games.

RHODE ISLAND 94, FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON 63: Jimmy Baron scored 22 points to lead five Rhode Island players in double figures and the 23rd-ranked Rams defeated Fairleigh Dickinson to extend their winning streak to nine games.

Rhode Island (14-1) is off to its best start since 1946-47, and remains undefeated at home this season.

WISCONSIN 70, MICHIGAN 54: Reserve freshman Jon Leuer scored a career-high 25 points and Marcus Landry added 15 to lift No. 25 Wisconsin over Michigan in the Big Ten opener for both.

Trevon Hughes, the Badgers' leading scorer, returned after missing one game with an injured right ankle and scored five points. The Badgers (11-2) have won five straight games and their only losses are to Top Ten teams - Marquette and Duke.

Women's Top 25

TENNESSEE 102, DEPAUL 68: Benched for the first half for missing curfew, Candace Parker scored 17 points and third-ranked Tennessee beat No. 15 DePaul..

Parker, playing near her hometown of Naperville, Ill., had close to 60 family and friends in attendance. She didn't start for the first time in her career.

Alex Fuller scored 19 points and Nicky Anosike added 17 for the Lady Vols (11-1).

Deirdre Naughton, Allie Quigley and Natasha Williams each scored 13 for DePaul (11-2).

RUTGERS 55, PEPPERDINE 45: Matee Ajavon scored a game-high 16 points, helping No. 6 Rutgers (10-2) to a lackluster win.

GEORGIA 93, PRESBYTERIAN 49: Megan Darrah scored a season-high 20 points and had five steals to lead No. 7 Georgia. Ashley Houts added 16 points and six assists for Georgia (13-0), and Tasha Humphrey had a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

BAYLOR 89, NORTH CAROLINA A&T 48. Rachel Allison scored a career-high 28 points to lead No. 9 Baylor (11-1) past North Carolina A&T.

NOTRE DAME 84, RICHMOND 59: Charel Allen scored 18 points and Ashley Barlow sparked a pair of first-half spurts, helping No. 14 Notre Dame beat Richmond.
