TAMPA - The University of South Florida has named a visiting instructor of criminology to lead its newly created public safety team on an interim basis.
In the fall, the university revamped its police and emergency operations, anticipating that an independent report would show that its police department was woefully understaffed and unequipped to deal with special events and major emergencies.
Bruce Benson, who teaches criminology at USF Sarasota-Manatee and is the public safety emeritus director at Michigan State University, will lead the new division as its interim assistant vice president.
