Have A Close Brush With Artist's Work

Published: January 4, 2008

NEW PORT RICHEY - Art is the free expression of what's inside its creator, with no rules or boundaries, Carey Yaskovic says.

Take a look at paintings from his perspective at the downtown Progress Energy Art Gallery as it hosts his "Fatal Abstraction" exhibit.

The show kicks off with a First Friday artist's reception from 6 to 9 tonight and runs the rest of this month at the gallery, 6231 Grand Blvd.

Most of Yaskovic's works are large pieces featuring abstract designs, and some flow across multiple canvases, said gallery director Karren Doll Tolliver.

Also featured will be reclaimed furniture Yaskovic has painted and sculptures made from machine parts. Plus, he will unveil a new technique he developed for painting on burlap.

A longtime resident of New Port Richey, Yaskovic went to Gulf High School and graduated with honors from Tampa Technical Institute in 1996.

He has operated his own company, Perm-A-Grin T-shirts, since 1998.

Yaskovic creates custom signs and business cards as well as screen-printed T-shirts sporting his artwork. His clients have included Lexington Homes' 2005 "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" project in Largo and the Jessica Lunsford memorial playground project in Homosassa Springs.

Yaskovic began displaying his art in the Orlando area in 1999 and has exhibited in places such as the Insomnia Coffee House Lounge in Palm Harbor and the Pasco Arts Council gallery in Holiday.

He also has judged art competitions and has participated in the Great American Teach-In at Gulf and Ridgewood high schools.

"I've known Carey for many years," Tolliver said. "His work has evolved considerably over that time. His latest work is unlike anything he's done previously. It is calmer and much more abstract and has a beautiful, energetic flow about it."

Other artists who will exhibit in January's show are Michelle Astuto Collins, Suzanna Holland, Klaus Lang and Shannon Thek.

Gallery hours are noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
