PORT RICHEY - A water main break on U.S. 19 early Thursday morning prompted the city to issue a boil water notice for some utility customers, officials said.
The break resulted in a loss of pressure to the Port Richey's water system, affecting an estimated 1,000 residential and commercial customers just outside the city limits.
"We believe the cold affected the pipe," said Patrick Stewart, the city's utility director.
The boil water notice is for customers in the Brown Acres East subdivision and those who live west of U.S. 19 between the Westport subdivision and Sandra Drive.
Thursday afternoon, utility workers were busy replacing the fractured water distribution line and Stewart said pressure was expected to be back to normal Thursday night.
However, the boil water notice likely will remain in effect through the weekend, or until pending bacteriological tests confirm the water is safe to drink, city officials said.
Those affected by the water notice are advised to bring water for drinking or cooking to a rolling boil for about one minute, or use bottled water.
