Regarding "Vets Euthanize Sickly Whale" (Metro, Jan. 2):
Scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently tried to save an ailing sperm whale that was found near the mouth of Tampa Bay. The whale was towed to shore, and reportedly will be buried.
Your tax dollars at work. It shows that we care.
But we already care about all of our animals. Even pregnant pigs are protected in the Florida Constitution. I am not sure if any of the hams I have cooked since that amendment was enacted in 2002 taste any better than the ones before, but I feel so much better that those pigs got to rove about while they were expecting. Perhaps some of them have gotten to go to Lamaze classes.
The truly sad aspect is that sometimes our "caring" results in loss for other creatures. So please join me in avoiding the consumption of crab, shark meat or any other marine scavenger species. They deserve some respect right now. Lots of them are going to bed skinnier tonight, because "caring" people just took almost 17 tons of food off of their plate and gave it to the worms.
