TAMPA - Clearwater police have identified a second suspect in connection to a Sept. 18 drug-related robbery in which a man was fatally shot in an apartment.
Gabriel Dixon, 21, of 1131 Carlton St., Clearwater, was arrested Friday and charged with first-degree murder after a DNA test linked him to the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Joseph Shaw, police said.
Dixon was arrested at Pinellas County Jail, where he already was being held for violating his probation on a burglary charge, according to police.
Joseph Lee Simmons, 21, of 361 Hancock St., Dunedin, was arrested Nov. 19 in connection with Shaw's death. Simmons, who also was charged with first-degree murder, had fled Florida and was found in Georgia by detectives and agents with the U.S. Marshal Service, police said.
Dixon and Simmons, along with two other men who have not been identified, forced their way into a Clearwater apartment at 1307 Flagler Drive about 3:40 a.m. Sept. 18, detectives said. They ransacked the apartment and demanded drugs and money, police say.
Shawanda Larry, 39, was in the apartment with Shaw during the attack and was also shot when the assailants were leaving, police said. Larry was taken to St. Petersburg's Bayfront Medical Center and was discharged a few days later.
Dixon and Simmons are being held without bail at Pinellas County Jail.
