Stanton Begins Bid For New Job

Published: January 5, 2008

ISLAMORADA - The former Largo city manager fired after his sex change plans were made public wants to be Islamorada's next village manager.
Susan Stanton was known as Steve Stanton throughout her 14-year tenure as Largo's city manager.

She is competing against 20 others to replace outgoing Village Manager Gary Word. Finalists will be selected at the end of the month, with interviews and a hiring decision expected by the end of February.

The Largo City Commission voted early last year to fire Stanton from his job, which paid $140,000 annually. Commissioners said it was Stanton's judgment, not the sex change revelation, that prompted the votes.

Stanton says she wants to stay in the state and has been keeping up with its politics. Last spring, she applied to be city manager in Sarasota. She was among the top three candidates out of 15 semifinalists but failed in June to win the post.

Stanton legally changed her name to Susan in June and has been dressing as a woman for months. She has said she eventually plans to have a sex-change operation.

Information from The Tampa Tribune archives was used in this report.
