PLANT CITY - A second candidate has announced intentions to run for the city commission seat presently held by Commissioner Robert Brown.
Longtime Plant City resident Dean Snyder, owner of Snyder Investments & Financial Services, made the announcement Thursday.
"I have always felt compelled to be involved politically in this great community," Snyder said. "I feel this is an important time in the history of Plant City and the right time for me to seek election on the city commission."
Brown is expected to announce during a commission meeting on Jan. 14 whether he will seek another term.
Former Mayor and Commissioner Mike Sparkman already has announced his candidacy for the same post.
Snyder said he wants to protect the city's historical characteristics.
"The architectural beauty preserved in the downtown and residential historic districts is unique," Snyder said. "Although we need to grow into the 21st century, we can't afford to lose our town's historical significance,"
Snyder, 53, was born in Muncie, Ind., but raised in Eastern Hillsborough County. He graduated from Brandon High School. After moving to Mobile, Ala., he joined the Alabama Army National Guard. He graduated from Signal School at Fort Gordon, Ga., and served a total of seven years.
Snyder married Mikie Ceresa Springer in 1976. They moved to Plant City in 1986. They have two sons, Adam and Brandon.
"I want this town to maintain the family atmosphere that I have grown to love," Snyder said. "We must take the steps necessary to maintain our sense of history, particularly during a time of growth and development."
