ORLANDO - Central Florida's Kevin Smith, the nation's leading rusher this season, changed his mind and will turn pro, the school confirmed Sunday night.
Smith seriously challenged Barry Sanders' NCAA record of 2,628 rushing yards in a season, but finished 61 yards short.
"I reviewed the season as a whole, talked to my mother and expressed myself with my mother," Smith told The Associated Press. "She basically told me, 'Do what makes you happy, because it's only you that has to put the input in order to get the output.'"
GMAC BOWL: At Mobile, Ala., Paul Smith had his NCAA-record 14th consecutive 300-yard passing game and threw five touchdowns, and Tulsa converted four fumble recoveries into first-half scores on the way to a 63-7 romp against Bowling Green,
With all that help, the Golden Hurricane (10-4) ran up a 35-0 halftime lead.
Smith passed for 312 yards. He broke the record of 13 300-yard efforts in a row he shared with BYU's Ty Detmer, whose streak stretched over the 1989 and 1990 seasons.
JONES PONDERS MOVE: June Jones spent Sunday night trying to decide whether to accept an offer to coach SMU or return to Hawaii.
