GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Randy Rochelle.
The first major cold front of the year pushed through our area last week and brought with it some very cool air. Offshore water temperatures dropped into the middle 60s but have since come back up a bit. The front also brought some high winds that stirred up the Gulf water. So how will this affect the offshore bite?
Closer to shore, inside the 30-foot mark, will be affected the most. Water temperatures through the water column dropped and this will slow the bite for a while. Out deeper the fish seemed to take the front in stride and continue to chew. Other than the temperatures swings, it's been the high winds and rough seas that affected the offshore gang the most.
The only report I got this week was from Jack Hexter, Robert Fisher and crew. On Sunday they ran due west of Tarpon Springs and made a few drops on some ledges and rock piles in 40 to 55 feet of water.
Hexter said it was a strong morning bite and by noon the bite was done. They managed a nice box of gag grouper, falling just short of their limit.
The rest of the week looks decent weather-wise and the fish are chewing, so get out there and get them before the winter winds shut us down.
