LAKE ALFRED The fire at Interstate 4 and State Road 557 grew to 500 acres tonight.
Earlier, firefighters were battling a 250-acre brush fire about five miles east of Polk City. The fire had not burned out as of 9 p.m.
The fire was not endangering any structures, said Chris Kintner, a Florida Division of Forestry spokesperson. Residents had to deal with smoky conditions.
The wind was blowing from the east, so smoke did not affect traffic on I-4, but officials deployed signs to warn motorists of smoke in the area.

No one has been hurt, fire officials said.
