A Port Richey neighborhood appears to be perilously close to a controlled burn Tuesday on an island at the southern end of Werner J. Boyce Salt Springs State Park. The heavy smoke from the six-acre fire caught the attention of residents and drivers along U.S. 19 as far south as the Pinellas County line, while those living and working in the neighborhood, separated from the burn by a narrow canal, paid little notice.

PORT RICHEY - The plume of smoke rising above west Pasco County today isn't anything to worry about. It's a controlled burn.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is burning 6 acres for land-management purposes on a small island off the coast of Port Richey, according to the Division of Forestry, which authorized the burn.
Motorists and Pasco residents have been calling different area agencies all day trying to figure out the source of the black smoke. It can be seen from Pinellas County.
