TAMPA - A water main break forced the city to close one lane of Ashley Drive between Channelside Drive and Brorein Street on Monday. Part of the road was expected to remain closed today.
The 10-inch water main was repaired by Monday afternoon, said Eli Franco, distribution division manager for the water department. Repaving work likely will take a couple of days, and that stretch of Ashley will remain one lane until the work is done.
Department officials suggest drivers use Franklin Street or Florida Avenue as alternates.
The lane closure didn't do much to disrupt traffic Monday evening. Traffic on Ashley heading toward Interstate 275 appeared to be at the normal rush-hour volume. The break did not affect motorists turning onto Ashley from Kennedy Boulevard.
The Channelside/Brorein segment of Ashley runs near the Tampa Convention Center and is usually accessed via the Platt Street Bridge.
The line break comes as temperatures climb after a cold spell. When the temperature drops, pipes contract. When the weather warms up, pipes expand and sometimes crack.
