Published: January 8, 2008

TAMPA - Two years ago, before his freshman year in high school, Doug Williams Jr. applied and took the entrance exam at Tampa Catholic. Ultimately, the son of former Bucs and Redskins QB Doug Williams opted to attend Jefferson High and play football for the Dragons.

Last season he backed up Hillsborough County's second-leading passer, Zack Grossi. Next season, he is expected to back up another of the county's top quarterbacks - at Tampa Catholic.

Williams Sr. confirmed the process has begun for his son to transfer from Jefferson.

"That would be correct," Williams said of his son going to Tampa Catholic.

The two attended Friday's Jesuit-Tampa Catholic basketball game, where they cheered on the Crusaders.

"I don't think its official yet," Tampa Catholic coach Bob Henriquez said. "There's still some paperwork that needs to be worked out."

As for where he'll fit in on the roster, that will have to be worked out.

Henriquez hasn't seen Williams play, except for a brief period during last year's Spring Jamboree. At the very least, he'd be backing up Christian Green, the sophomore quarterback who helped lead the Crusaders to the Class 2A state championship game.

"Obviously, I already have a good quarterback here," Henriquez said of Green.

There have been rumors circulating that Green could be transferring from Tampa Catholic, but Henriquez said he has been assured The Tampa Tribune's All-Hillsborough County first-team selection as an athlete will remain a Crusader.

"Christian is our starting quarterback," Henriquez said. "He came a long way and ended up having a great season. We'll have to see how it all plays out."

RAVENEL SUSPENDED BY FHSAA: Brandon boys basketball coach Mark Hermann confirmed Monday senior power forward and Boston College commitment Evan Ravenel has been suspended by the FHSAA for three weeks for using profanity toward an official during the Great Florida Shootout in Kissimmee over the holiday break.

Hermann said Ravenel, averaging 15.2 points and 11.1 rebounds per game, approached an official after a game to argue a call.

"You can't use profanity toward an official," Hermann said.

Hermann said he doesn't plan on appealing the suspension.

"This will be a tough lesson for him to learn," Hermann said.

Brandon is 9-3.
