TAMPA - Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee will be honored Thursday for his office's work in effectively responding to people with mental illnesses by helping them avoid jail.
Gee will be honored during the Florida Partners in Crisis board meeting in Tampa where members will discuss a Florida Supreme Court report seeking to transform the state's mental health system.
Gee recently was named Sheriff of the Year by the National Crisis Intervention Team Convention, a police-based crisis response program that seeks to provide people with mental illness who are in crisis with appropriate treatment so they can avoid imprisonment.
