TAMPA - Police are combing the Palma Ceia area for a robber in a beige suit jacket and brown ball cap who took an undetermined amount of jewelry and cash from a store about 2 p.m. today.
Tampa police spokeswoman Andrea Davis said the robber appeared to be a customer when he knocked on the door of Portofino Jewelers, 1525 S. Dale Mabry Highway. The owner, who has a buzzer system, buzzed the man into the business, where the man then pulled out a gun and ordered the owner to the floor, Davis said.
The gunman told the owner not to look at him, reached into a jewelry case and took jewelry and cash, Davis said. Police are interviewing the owner to assess what was taken.
Davis described the robber as a white man, possibly in his 40s. He stands about 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighs about 180 pounds and has black hair and a moustache. At the time of the heist, he was wearing black sunglasses, a brown ball cap, a beige suit jacket, a brown shirt and black pants. He carried a black, duffel-like bag.
Detectives are seeking video of the robber entering or leaving the jewelry store from neighboring businesses, Davis said.
