DADE CITY - Licensed drivers are invited to vie for a $1,200 purse at the Pasco County Fair's inaugural demolition derby Feb. 24, the last day of the seven-day 61st annual fair.
The field is limited to 60 cars and all drivers must supply their own rides. Cars are limited to two per driver. All drivers and cars must be entered and at the track two hours before the derby starts at 2 p.m.
The entry fee is $25. Drivers ages 16 and 17 may participate with a notarized medical statement from a parent or guardian.
Spectators can watch the smash 'em and crash 'em event free after paying the fair's gate admission of $7 for adults and $4 for children ages 6 through 12.

OH, BABY: In other news, applications are available for the Baby Pageant, which will begin at 1 p.m. Feb. 24.
The deadline to enter is Feb. 15 and a $25 nonrefundable fee must accompany the registration form.
The pageant is limited to the first 25 boys and 25 girls to sign up in each age group: newborn through 11 months, ages 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. A prince and princess will be selected from the oldest group to represent the fair at various parades and other functions throughout the year.
Other winners will receive trophies, and all contestants will get pageant keepsakes.
Each entrants' parents must have lived in Pasco County for the past six months.
DEADLINES LOOM: Friday is the deadline to enter a pageant, a talent show and two livestock shows in association with the fair. Here are the details:
•The Miss Pasco County Pageant is open to contestants ages 17 to 24 who live in Pasco and surrounding counties. Two winners will be crowned Feb. 23 to advance to the Miss Florida Pageant. There is no entry fee but Miss Pasco hopefuls must raise $100 for the Children's Miracle Network before the Feb. 16 dress rehearsal.
•The Pasco Showcase of Talent on Feb. 18 and 19 is open to individuals and groups. Entry fees are $20 a person and $20 a group plus $10 for each member. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded at a preliminary contest Jan. 19.
•Pasco kindergartners through 12th-graders may enter poultry, rabbits and cavies (think guinea pigs) in shows running throughout the fair, Feb. 18 to 24. Each exhibitor may enter a total of three rabbits, not more than three birds and only one cavy. The entry fee is $2 an animal.
