PLANT CITY - Local building permit activity sharply declined in 2007, a city report states.
For the year, builders pulled permits for $74.8 million in construction, less than half the record $152 million in 2006. Permits for single-family homes dropped by more than half.
The lower numbers reflect the nationwide downturn in the real estate market, Mayor Rick Lott said.
Lott said he wouldn't be surprised if there's a rebound this year. There are several major projects in the offing that could bring the statistics up, Lott said.
The record pace set in 2006 was fueled by a robust residential market plus a $39 million permit for improvements at the city utilities plant.
In recent years, permit activity in Plant City has been as low as $30.3 million, in 1998.
