The Wikimedia Foundation, which oversees operations of the popular Web encyclopedia Wikipedia.com, said today it has appointed Erik Moeller as deputy director. He will assume the position Jan. 10.
Moeller's appointment comes as the foundation is relocating its headquarters from St. Petersburg to San Francisco. The new office will open Feb. 1.
In this new role, Moeller will lead the development and execution of Wikimedia's technical strategy and other projects. The foundation said that Moeller has been an active editor of Wikimedia's projects since 2001.
"He has made thousands of edits and uploads, has contributed to the MediaWiki software and helped launch Wikinews and Wikimedia Commons. He is a frequent writer and commentator on topics such as free content, free software and wiki technology," the foundation said in a statement.
Moeller has sat for two consecutive terms on the Wikimedia board of trustees. As part of the transition to join the staff of the foundation, he has resigned his board seat. He will relocate from Berlin, the foundation said.
