DALLAS - Baggage handlers and cargo agents at Continental Airlines Inc. have voted to reject a union's bid to organize them, the Houston-based airline said Wednesday.
The Transport Workers Union was seeking to represent about 7,900 ground workers. The vote to reject organization was the third in about as many years.
Voting began in December and ended Wednesday. The vote count was not immediately disclosed.
"Once again, we are pleased that our co-workers recognized the value of our direct working relationship," said Bill Meehan, a vice president for Continental.
TWU officials said the Continental ramp workers are the largest group of nonunion employees in the heavily organized airline industry. In 2006, the TWU fell about 300 short of the majority needed for approval. Votes not cast are in effect a vote against the union. The TWU also lost by a narrow margin in 2005.
