Russell Crowe and Christian Bale do their scowling best to pump new life into the Western with this remake of the 1957 flick of the same name, directed by James Mangold ("Walk the Line"). Crowe plays a charismatic bank robber, while Bale is the debt-ridden rancher who agrees to help transport him to the titular train, eluding the former's trigger-happy gang along the way.

DEATH SENTENCE
"Saw" director James Wan scales back the gore ever-so-slightly for this tale of a regular suburban dad (Kevin Bacon) who turns into a ruthless vigilante when his teen-age son is murdered by a gang. As always in such revenge stories, the tit-for-tat killing spirals out of control. Garrett Hedlund plays the gang leader, while Kelly Preston is Bacon's improbably well-preserved Mrs.

SUNSHINE
This tense sci-fi thriller from "Trainspotting" director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland ("28 Days Later") sends a team of scientists — led by Cillian Murphy, the memorably creepy villain from "Red Eye" and "Batman Begins" — into space on a doomsday mission to reignite the dying sun's core with a massive bomb. Think of it as an intense, sophisticated and stylish version of "Armageddon," with a far more interesting cast.

ZODIAC: THE DIRECTOR'S CUT
Those who expected the director of "Seven" to take a splatter-'n'-shriek approach to the true story of the Zodiac killer may have been surprised by David Fincher's studious approach to the material, which focuses as much on the investigation — led by journalists played by Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey Jr. — as the crimes. This expanded release includes several behind-the-scenes documentaries, including one on the prime suspect in the still-unsolved crimes.

THE GOLDEN DOOR
The story of the American melting pot gets a closer look in this pensive Italian costume drama about poor migrants from Sicily. Director Emanuele Crialese eschews the usual rags-to-riches fanfare to focus instead on the difficulty of the journey faced by a family of poor Sicilians, from the overcrowded ship to the harsh processing at Ellis Island. Charlotte Gainsbourg plays a fellow passenger in dire personal straits.

THE RICHES: SEASON 1
Those who were hoping to catch up with the antics of a cartoon kid named Richie may be disappointed to discover that this is actually a live-action FX series about a family of grifters who assume the identity of a wealthy Louisiana family (named, as you may have guessed, the Riches). Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver camp it up as, respectively, the conniving Pop and Mom.
